__Motivation__
As we start to migrate codecs to use the new `Buffer` API, we need a way for them to get a handle of `BufferAllocator`.
__Modification__
Added `bufferAllocator()` method to `ChannelConfig`, `Channel` and `ChannelHandlerContext`
__Result__
Codecs can allocate `Buffer` instances
Motivation:
We wish to separate these two into clearer write/read interfaces.
In particular, we don't want to be able to add listeners to promises, because it makes it easy to add them out of order.
We can't prevent it entirely, because any promise can be freely converted to a future where listeners can be added.
We can, however, discourage this in the API.
Modification:
The Promise interface no longer extends the Future interface.
Numerous changes to make the project compile and its tests run.
Result:
Clearer separation of concerns in the code.
Motivation:
We should just add `executor()` to the `ChannelOutboundInvoker` interface and override this method in `Channel` to return `EventLoop`.
Modifications:
- Add `executor()` method to `ChannelOutboundInvoker`
- Let `Channel` override this method and return `EventLoop`.
- Adjust all usages of `eventLoop()`
- Add some default implementations
Result:
API cleanup
Motivation:
The generics for the existing futures, promises, and listeners are too complicated.
This complication comes from the existence of `ChannelPromise` and `ChannelFuture`, which forces listeners to care about the particular _type_ of future being listened on.
Modification:
* Add a `FutureContextListener` which can take a context object as an additional argument. This allows our listeners to have the channel piped through to them, so they don't need to rely on the `ChannelFuture.channel()` method.
* Make the `FutureListener`, along with the `FutureContextListener` sibling, the default listener API, retiring the `GenericFutureListener` since we no longer need to abstract over the type of the future.
* Change all uses of `ChannelPromise` to `Promise<Void>`.
* Change all uses of `ChannelFuture` to `Future<Void>`.
* Change all uses of `GenericFutureListener` to either `FutureListener` or `FutureContextListener` as needed.
* Remove `ChannelFutureListener` and `GenericFutureListener`.
* Introduce a `ChannelFutureListeners` enum to house the constants that previously lived in `ChannelFutureListener`. These constants now implement `FutureContextListener` and take the `Channel` as a context.
* Remove `ChannelPromise` and `ChannelFuture` — all usages now rely on the plain `Future` and `Promise` APIs.
* Add static factory methods to `DefaultPromise` that allow us to create promises that are initialised as successful or failed.
* Remove `CompleteFuture`, `SucceededFuture`, `FailedFuture`, `CompleteChannelFuture`, `SucceededChannelFuture`, and `FailedChannelFuture`.
* Remove `ChannelPromiseNotifier`.
Result:
Cleaner generics and more straight forward code.
Bootstrap methods now return Future<Channel> instead of ChannelFuture
Motivation:
In #8516 it was proposed to at some point remove the specialised ChannelFuture and ChannelPromise.
Or at least make them not extend Future and Promise, respectively.
One pain point encountered in this discussion is the need to get access to the channel object after it has been initialised, but without waiting for the channel registration to propagate through the pipeline.
Modification:
Add a Bootstrap.createUnregistered method, which will return a Channel directly.
All other Bootstrap methods that previously returned ChannelFuture now return Future<Channel>
Result:
It's now possible to obtain an initialised but unregistered channel from a bootstrap, without blocking.
And the other bootstrap methods now only release their channels through the result of their futures, preventing racy access to the channels.
Motivation:
HTTP is a plaintext protocol which means that someone may be able
to eavesdrop the data. To prevent this, HTTPS should be used whenever
possible. However, maintaining using https:// in all URLs may be
difficult. The nohttp tool can help here. The tool scans all the files
in a repository and reports where http:// is used.
Modifications:
- Added nohttp (via checkstyle) into the build process.
- Suppressed findings for the websites
that don't support HTTPS or that are not reachable
Result:
- Prevent using HTTP in the future.
- Encourage users to use HTTPS when they follow the links they found in
the code.
Raise the Netty 5 minimum required Java version to Java 11.
Motivation:
Java 11 has been out for some time, and Netty 5 is still some ways out.
There are also many good features in Java 11 that we wish to use, such as VarHandles, var-keyword, and the module system.
There is no reason for Netty 5 to not require Java 11, since Netty 4.x will still be supported for the time being.
Modification:
Remove everything in the pom files related to Java versions older than Java 11.
Remove the animal-sniffer plug-in and rely on the `--release` compiler flag instead.
Remove docker files related to Java versions older than Java 11.
Remove the copied SCTP APIs -- we should test this commit independently on Windows.
Remove the OpenJdkSelfSignedCertGenerator.java file and just always use Bouncy Castle for generating self-signed certificates for testing.
Make netty-testsuite tests pass by including Bouncy Castle as a test dependency, so we're able to generate our self-signed certificate.
Result:
Java 11 is now the minimum required Java version.
Motivation:
We wish to use Unsafe as little as possible, and Java 8 allows us
to take some short-cuts or play some tricks with generics,
for the purpose of working around having to declare all checked
exceptions. Ideally all checked exceptions would be declared, but
the code base is not ready for that yet.
Modification:
The call to UNSAFE.throwException has been removed, so when we need
that feature, we instead use the generic exception trick.
In may cases, Java 8 allows us to throw Throwable directly. This
happens in cases where no exception is declared to be thrown in a
scope.
Finally, some warnings have also been fixed, and some imports have
been reorganised and cleaned up while I was modifying the files
anyway.
Result:
We no longer use Unsafe for throwing any exceptions.
Motivation:
The type IntObjectMap with the key of primitive int can help lower the cost of boxing and unboxing, and improve performance. I think it's more suitable for fragments field in SctpMessageCompletionHandler.java.
Modification:
Just replace the type of fragments field with IntObjectMap.
Result:
Improve performance slightly while decoding sctp message.
Motivation:
In next major version of netty users should use ChannelHandler everywhere. We should ensure we do the same
Modifications:
Replace usage of deprecated classes / interfaces with ChannelHandler
Result:
Use non-deprecated code
Motivation:
ByteToMessageDecoder requires using an intermediate List to put results into. This intermediate list adds overhead (memory/CPU) which grows as the number of objects increases. This overhead can be avoided by directly propagating events through the ChannelPipeline via ctx.fireChannelRead(...). This also makes the semantics more clear and allows us to keep track if we need to call ctx.read() in all cases.
Modifications:
- Remove List from the method signature of ByteToMessageDecoder.decode(...) and decodeLast(...)
- Adjust all sub-classes
- Adjust unit tests
- Fix javadocs.
Result:
Adjust ByteToMessageDecoder as noted in https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/8525.
Motivation:
As we now us java8 as minimum java version we can deprecate ChannelInboundHandlerAdapter / ChannelOutboundHandlerAdapter and just move the default implementations into the interfaces. This makes things a bit more flexible for the end-user and also simplifies the class-hierarchy.
Modifications:
- Mark ChannelInboundHandlerAdapter and ChannelOutboundHandlerAdapter as deprecated
- Add default implementations to ChannelInboundHandler / ChannelOutboundHandler
- Refactor our code to not use ChannelInboundHandlerAdapter / ChannelOutboundHandlerAdapter anymore
Result:
Cleanup class-hierarchy and make things a bit more flexible.
Motivation:
We can just use Objects.requireNonNull(...) as a replacement for ObjectUtil.checkNotNull(....)
Modifications:
- Use Objects.requireNonNull(...)
Result:
Less code to maintain.
Motivation:
We have a utility method to check for > 0 and >0 arguments. We should use it.
Modification:
use checkPositive/checkPositiveOrZero instead of if statement.
Result:
Re-use utility method.
Motivation:
We can use lambdas now as we use Java8.
Modification:
use lambda function for all package, #8751 only migrate transport package.
Result:
Code cleanup.
* Decouble EventLoop details from the IO handling for each transport to allow easy re-use of code and customization
Motiviation:
As today extending EventLoop implementations to add custom logic / metrics / instrumentations is only possible in a very limited way if at all. This is due the fact that most implementations are final or even package-private. That said even if these would be public there are the ability to do something useful with these is very limited as the IO processing and task processing are very tightly coupled. All of the mentioned things are a big pain point in netty 4.x and need improvement.
Modifications:
This changeset decoubled the IO processing logic from the task processing logic for the main transport (NIO, Epoll, KQueue) by introducing the concept of an IoHandler. The IoHandler itself is responsible to wait for IO readiness and process these IO events. The execution of the IoHandler itself is done by the SingleThreadEventLoop as part of its EventLoop processing. This allows to use the same EventLoopGroup (MultiThreadEventLoupGroup) for all the mentioned transports by just specify a different IoHandlerFactory during construction.
Beside this core API change this changeset also allows to easily extend SingleThreadEventExecutor / SingleThreadEventLoop to add custom logic to it which then can be reused by all the transports. The ideas are very similar to what is provided by ScheduledThreadPoolExecutor (that is part of the JDK). This allows for example things like:
* Adding instrumentation / metrics:
* how many Channels are registered on an SingleThreadEventLoop
* how many Channels were handled during the IO processing in an EventLoop run
* how many task were handled during the last EventLoop / EventExecutor run
* how many outstanding tasks we have
...
...
* Implementing custom strategies for choosing the next EventExecutor / EventLoop to use based on these metrics.
* Use different Promise / Future / ScheduledFuture implementations
* decorate Runnable / Callables when submitted to the EventExecutor / EventLoop
As a lot of functionalities are folded into the MultiThreadEventLoopGroup and SingleThreadEventLoopGroup this changeset also removes:
* AbstractEventLoop
* AbstractEventLoopGroup
* EventExecutorChooser
* EventExecutorChooserFactory
* DefaultEventLoopGroup
* DefaultEventExecutor
* DefaultEventExecutorGroup
Result:
Fixes https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/8514 .
Motivation:
We can use the diamond operator these days.
Modification:
Use diamond operator whenever possible.
Result:
More modern code and less boiler-plate.
Motivation:
At the moment it’s possible to have a Channel in Netty that is not registered / assigned to an EventLoop until register(...) is called. This is suboptimal as if the Channel is not registered it is also not possible to do anything useful with a ChannelFuture that belongs to the Channel. We should think about if we should have the EventLoop as a constructor argument of a Channel and have the register / deregister method only have the effect of add a Channel to KQueue/Epoll/... It is also currently possible to deregister a Channel from one EventLoop and register it with another EventLoop. This operation defeats the threading model assumptions that are wide spread in Netty, and requires careful user level coordination to pull off without any concurrency issues. It is not a commonly used feature in practice, may be better handled by other means (e.g. client side load balancing), and therefore we propose removing this feature.
Modifications:
- Change all Channel implementations to require an EventLoop for construction ( + an EventLoopGroup for all ServerChannel implementations)
- Remove all register(...) methods from EventLoopGroup
- Add ChannelOutboundInvoker.register(...) which now basically means we want to register on the EventLoop for IO.
- Change ChannelUnsafe.register(...) to not take an EventLoop as parameter (as the EventLoop is supplied on custruction).
- Change ChannelFactory to take an EventLoop to create new Channels and introduce ServerChannelFactory which takes an EventLoop and one EventLoopGroup to create new ServerChannel instances.
- Add ServerChannel.childEventLoopGroup()
- Ensure all operations on the accepted Channel is done in the EventLoop of the Channel in ServerBootstrap
- Change unit tests for new behaviour
Result:
A Channel always has an EventLoop assigned which will never change during its life-time. This ensures we are always be able to call any operation on the Channel once constructed (unit the EventLoop is shutdown). This also simplifies the logic in DefaultChannelPipeline a lot as we can always call handlerAdded / handlerRemoved directly without the need to wait for register() to happen.
Also note that its still possible to deregister a Channel and register it again. It's just not possible anymore to move from one EventLoop to another (which was not really safe anyway).
Fixes https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/8513.
Motivation:
This transport is unique because it uses Java's blocking IO (java.io / java.net) under the hood. However it is not clear if this transport is actually useful so it should be removed.
Modifications:
- Remove OIO transport and RXTX transport which depend on it.
- Remove Oio*Sctp* implementations
- Remove PerThreadEventLoop* which was only used by OIO transport.
Result:
Fixes https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/8510.
Motivation:
We plan to remove the OIO based transports in Netty 5 so we should mark these as deprecated already.
Modifications:
Mark all OIO based transports as deprecated.
Result:
Give the user a heads-up for removal.
Motivation
There is a cost to concatenating strings and calling methods that will be wasted if the Logger's level is not enabled.
Modifications
Check if Log level is enabled before producing log statement. These are just a few cases found by RegEx'ing in the code.
Result
Tiny bit more efficient code.
Motivation:
Some `if` statements contains common parts that can be extracted.
Modifications:
Extract common parts from `if` statements.
Result:
Less code and bytecode. The code is simpler and more clear.
Motivation:
SctpMessageCompletionHandler stores fragments in a Map but not release the stored ByteBuf when the handler is removed.
Modifications:
Release all buffers that are still in the Map when handlerRemoved(...) is called.
Result:
No more leaks for fragemented messages.
Motivation:
The first parameter of SctpMessage is protocolIdentifier, and the second is streamIdentifier. So we need to swap the parameters in encode method
Modification:
Fix order
Result:
SctpOutboundByteStreamHandler works correctly.
Motivation:
Avoid multiple search in fragments map
Modifications:
Replace usage of Map.containsKey by Map.remove
Result:
During packet process, fragment is only search once in the map instead of 3 times in the previous worst case
Motivation:
For use cases that demand frequent updates of the write watermarks, an
API that requires immutable WriteWaterMark objects is not ideal, as it
implies a lot of object allocation.
For example, the HTTP/2 child channel API uses write watermarks for outbound
flow control and updates the write watermarks on every DATA frame write.
Modifications:
Remote @Deprecated tag from primitive getters and setters, however the corresponding
channel options remain deprecated.
Result:
Primitive getters and setters for write watermarks are no longer marked @Deprecated.
Motivation:
The SCTP_INIT_MAXSTREAMS property is ignored on NioSctpServerChannel / OioSctpServerChannel.
Modifications:
- Correctly use the netty ChannelOption
- Ensure getOption(...) works
- Add testcase.
Result:
SCTP_INIT_MAXSTREAMS works.
Conflicts:

Motivation:
JCTools supports both non-unsafe, unsafe versions of queues and JDK6 which allows us to shade the library in netty-common allowing it to stay "zero dependency".
Modifications:
- Remove copy paste JCTools code and shade the library (dependencies that are shaded should be removed from the <dependencies> section of the generated POM).
- Remove usage of OneTimeTask and remove it all together.
Result:
Less code to maintain and easier to update JCTools and less GC pressure as the queue implementation nt creates so much garbage
Related: #4333#4421#5128
Motivation:
slice(), duplicate() and readSlice() currently create a non-recyclable
derived buffer instance. Under heavy load, an application that creates a
lot of derived buffers can put the garbage collector under pressure.
Modifications:
- Add the following methods which creates a non-recyclable derived buffer
- retainedSlice()
- retainedDuplicate()
- readRetainedSlice()
- Add the new recyclable derived buffer implementations, which has its
own reference count value
- Add ByteBufHolder.retainedDuplicate()
- Add ByteBufHolder.replace(ByteBuf) so that..
- a user can replace the content of the holder in a consistent way
- copy/duplicate/retainedDuplicate() can delegate the holder
construction to replace(ByteBuf)
- Use retainedDuplicate() and retainedSlice() wherever possible
- Miscellaneous:
- Rename DuplicateByteBufTest to DuplicatedByteBufTest (missing 'D')
- Make ReplayingDecoderByteBuf.reject() return an exception instead of
throwing it so that its callers don't need to add dummy return
statement
Result:
Derived buffers are now recycled when created via retainedSlice() and
retainedDuplicate() and derived from a pooled buffer
Motivation:
OIO/NIO use a volatile variable to track if a read is pending. EPOLL does not use a volatile an executes a Runnable on the event loop thread to set readPending to false. These mechansims should be consistent, and not using a volatile variable is preferable because the variable is written to frequently in the event loop thread.
OIO also does not set readPending to false before each fireChannelRead operation and may result in reading more data than the user desires.
Modifications:
- OIO/NIO should not use a volatile variable for readPending
- OIO should set readPending to false before each fireChannelRead
Result:
OIO/NIO/EPOLL are more consistent w.r.t. readPending and volatile variable operations are reduced

Motivation:
Setting the WRITE_BUFFER_LOW_WATER_MARK before WRITE_BUFFER_HIGH_WATER_MARK results in an internal Exception (appears only in the logs) if the value is larger than the default high water mark value. The WRITE_BUFFER_HIGH_WATER_MARK call appears to have no effect in this context.
Setting the values in the reverse order works.
Modifications:
- deprecated ChannelOption.WRITE_BUFFER_HIGH_WATER_MARK and
ChannelOption.WRITE_BUFFER_LOW_WATER_MARK.
- add one new option called ChannelOption.WRITE_BUFFER_WATER_MARK.
Result:
The high/low water mark values limits caused by default values are removed.
Motivation:
A few implementations of OioServerChannel have a default max messages per read set to 16. We should set the default to 1 to prevent blocking on a read before setting a socket that has just been accepted.
Modifications:
- OioSctpServerChannel and OioServerSocketChannel metadata changed to use the default (1) max messages per read
Result:
Oio based servers will complete accepting a socket before potentially blocking waiting to accept other sockets.
Motivation:
Not all fields of SctpMessage which used to check message equality are used
to generate hashcode.
Modifications:
Use value of 'unordered' field in hashCode method.
Result:
Better hash function of SctpMessage.
Motivation:
SctpMessage.duplicate() copied message content that leads to additional buffer
allocation and memory copying.
Modifications:
Duplicate message content instead of copying it.
Result:
Better performace and less memory consumption.
Motivation:
The fix for https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/3884 breaks SctpEchoTest because Selector.select will always return 0 if you do not clear last selectedKeys.
Modifications:
Clear readSelector.selectedKeys() if it is not empty.
Result:
SctpEchoTest is green again.
Motivation:
We should use OneTimeTask where possible to reduce object creation.
Modifications:
Replace Runnable with OneTimeTask
Result:
Less object creation
Motivation:
As toString() is often used while logging we need to ensure this produces no exception.
Modifications:
Ensure we never throw an IllegalReferenceCountException.
Result:
Be able to log without produce exceptions.
Motivation:
OioSctpChannel.doReadMessages is iterating over the selected keys, and ignoring each selected key. It is not known why this is needed and no other channel implementation does this.
Modifications:
- Stop iterating over selected keys, and just read like other channels
Result:
No unnecessary iteration in OioSctpChannel.doReadMessages.
Fixes https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/3884
Motiviation:
The current read loops don't fascilitate reading a maximum amount of bytes. This capability is useful to have more fine grain control over how much data is injested.
Modifications:
- Add a setMaxBytesPerRead(int) and getMaxBytesPerRead() to ChannelConfig
- Add a setMaxBytesPerIndividualRead(int) and getMaxBytesPerIndividualRead to ChannelConfig
- Add methods to RecvByteBufAllocator so that a pluggable scheme can be used to control the behavior of the read loop.
- Modify read loop for all transport types to respect the new RecvByteBufAllocator API
Result:
The ability to control how many bytes are read for each read operation/loop, and a more extensible read loop.
Motivation:
Some SCTP applications require the SCTP unordered flag.
This flag was not exposed by Netty so applications were unable
to use it.
Modifications:
- Add unordered flag to SctpMessage.
- {Nio,Oio}SctpChannel pass unordered flag to MessageInfo on write.
- SctpOutboundByteStreamHandler may optionally request unordered
delivery for all outbound messages.
- Added test case to SctpEchoTest using unordered flag.
Result:
Fixes#3698. New constructors and methods added to SctpMessage and
SctpOutboundByteStreamHandler, but changes are backward compatible.
Motivation:
Each different *ChannelOption did extend ChannelOption in 4.0, which we changed in 4.1. This is a breaking change in terms of the API so we need to ensure we keep the old hierarchy.
Modifications:
- Let all *ChannelOption extend ChannelOption
- Add back constructor and mark it as @deprecated
Result:
No API breakage between 4.0 and 4.1
Motivation:
At the moment it's only possible for a user to set the RecvByteBufAllocator for a Channel but not access the Handle once it is assigned. This makes it hard to write more flexible implementations.
Modifications:
Add a new method to the Channel.Unsafe to allow access the the used Handle for the Channel. The RecvByteBufAllocator.Handle is created lazily.
Result:
It's possible to write more flexible implementatons that allow to adjust stuff on the fly for a Handle that is used by a Channel
Motivation:
We did various changes related to the ChannelOutboundBuffer in 4.0 branch. This commit port all of them over and so make sure our branches are synced in terms of these changes.
Related to [#2734], [#2709], [#2729], [#2710] and [#2693] .
Modification:
Port all changes that was done on the ChannelOutboundBuffer.
This includes the port of the following commits:
- 73dfd7c01b
- 997d8c32d2
- e282e504f1
- 5e5d1a58fd
- 8ee3575e72
- d6f0d12a86
- 16e50765d1
- 3f3e66c31a
Result:
- Less memory usage by ChannelOutboundBuffer
- Same code as in 4.0 branch
- Make it possible to use ChannelOutboundBuffer with Channel implementation that not extends AbstractChannel
Motivation:
4 and 5 were diverged long time ago and we recently reverted some of the
early commits in master. We must make sure 4.1 and master are not very
different now.
Modification:
Remove ChannelHandlerInvoker.writeAndFlush(...) and the related

Result:
4.1 and master got closer.

Modification:
Fix found differences
Result:
4.1 and master got closer.
Motivation:
At the moment ChanneConfig.setAutoRead(false) only is guaranteer to not have an extra channelRead(...) triggered when used from within the channelRead(...) or channelReadComplete(...) method. This is not the correct behaviour as it should also work from other methods that are triggered from within the EventLoop. For example a valid use case is to have it called from within a ChannelFutureListener, which currently not work as expected.
Beside this there is another bug which is kind of related. Currently Channel.read() will not work as expected for OIO as we will stop try to read even if nothing could be read there after one read operation on the socket (when the SO_TIMEOUT kicks in).
Modifications:
Implement the logic the right way for the NIO/OIO/SCTP and native transport, specific to the transport implementation. Also correctly handle Channel.read() for OIO transport by trigger a new read if SO_TIMEOUT was catched.
Result:
It is now also possible to use ChannelConfig.setAutoRead(false) from other methods that are called from within the EventLoop and have direct effect.
