d3d20dcdca Periodic Compactions (#5166)
Summary:
Introducing Periodic Compactions.

This feature allows all the files in a CF to be periodically compacted. It could help in catching any corruptions that could creep into the DB proactively as every file is constantly getting re-compacted.  And also, of course, it helps to cleanup data older than certain threshold.

- Introduced a new option `periodic_compaction_time` to control how long a file can live without being compacted in a CF.
- This works across all levels.
- The files are put in the same level after going through the compaction. (Related files in the same level are picked up as `ExpandInputstoCleanCut` is used).
- Compaction filters, if any, are invoked as usual.
- A new table property, `file_creation_time`, is introduced to implement this feature. This property is set to the time at which the SST file was created (and that time is given by the underlying Env/OS).

This feature can be enabled on its own, or in conjunction with `ttl`. It is possible to set a different time threshold for the bottom level when used in conjunction with ttl. Since `ttl` works only on 0 to last but one levels, you could set `ttl` to, say, 1 day, and `periodic_compaction_time` to, say, 7 days. Since `ttl < periodic_compaction_time` all files in last but one levels keep getting picked up based on ttl, and almost never based on periodic_compaction_time. The files in the bottom level get picked up for compaction based on `periodic_compaction_time`.

b45b1cde3e Feature for sampling and reporting compressibility (#4842)
Summary:
This is a feature to sample data-block compressibility and and report them as stats. 1 in N (tunable) blocks is sampled for compressibility using two algorithms:
1. lz4 or snappy for fast compression
2. zstd or zlib for slow but higher compression.

The stats are reported to the caller as raw-bytes and compressed-bytes. The block continues to be compressed for storage using the specified CompressionType.

The db_bench_tool how has a command line option for specifying the sampling rate. It's default value is 0 (no sampling). To test the overhead for a certain value, users can compare the performance of db_bench_tool, varying the sampling rate. It is unlikely to have a noticeable impact for high values like 20.

c8c8104d7e Dictionary compression for files written by SstFileWriter (#4978)
Summary:
If `CompressionOptions::max_dict_bytes` and/or `CompressionOptions::zstd_max_train_bytes` are set, `SstFileWriter` will now generate files respecting those options.

I refactored the logic a bit for deciding when to use dictionary compression. Previously we plumbed `is_bottommost_level` down to the table builder and used that. However it was kind of confusing in `SstFileWriter`'s context since we don't know what level the file will be ingested to. Instead, now the higher-level callers (e.g., flush, compaction, file writer) are responsible for building the right `CompressionOptions` to give the table builder.

62f70f6d14 Reduce scope of compression dictionary to single SST (#4952)
Summary:
Our previous approach was to train one compression dictionary per compaction, using the first output SST to train a dictionary, and then applying it on subsequent SSTs in the same compaction. While this was great for minimizing CPU/memory/I/O overhead, it did not achieve good compression ratios in practice. In our most promising potential use case, moderate reductions in a dictionary's scope make a major difference on compression ratio.

So, this PR changes compression dictionary to be scoped per-SST. It accepts the tradeoff during table building to use more memory and CPU. Important changes include:

- The `BlockBasedTableBuilder` has a new state when dictionary compression is in-use: `kBuffered`. In that state it accumulates uncompressed data in-memory whenever `Add` is called.
- After accumulating target file size bytes or calling `BlockBasedTableBuilder::Finish`, a `BlockBasedTableBuilder` moves to the `kUnbuffered` state. The transition (`EnterUnbuffered()`) involves sampling the buffered data, training a dictionary, and compressing/writing out all buffered data. In the `kUnbuffered` state, a `BlockBasedTableBuilder` behaves the same as before -- blocks are compressed/written out as soon as they fill up.
- Samples are now whole uncompressed data blocks, except the final sample may be a partial data block so we don't breach the user's configured `max_dict_bytes` or `zstd_max_train_bytes`. The dictionary trainer is supposed to work better when we pass it real units of compression. Previously we were passing 64-byte KV samples which was not realistic.

b32d087dbb Move MemoryAllocator option from Cache to BlockBasedTableOptions (#4676)
Summary:
Per offline discussion with siying, `MemoryAllocator` and `Cache` should be decouple. The idea is that memory allocator handles memory allocation, while cache handle cache policy.

It is normal that external cache libraries pack couple the two components for better optimization. If we want to integrate with such library in the future, we can make a wrapper of the library implementing both `Cache` and `MemoryAllocator` interface.

9d646a6311 Add db_bench options of data block hash index (#4281)
Summary:
Add `--data_block_index_type` and `--data_block_hash_table_util_ratio` option to `db_bench`.

`--data_block_index_type` can be either of `binary` (default) or `binary_and_hash`;
`--data_block_hash_table_util_ratio` will be a double. The default value is `0.75`.

19ec44fd39 Improve point-lookup performance using a data block hash index (#4174)
Summary:
Add hash index support to data blocks, which helps to reduce the CPU utilization of point-lookup operations. This feature is backward compatible with the data block created without the hash index. It is disabled by default unless `BlockBasedTableOptions::data_block_index_type` is set to `data_block_index_type = kDataBlockBinaryAndHash.`

The DB size would be bigger with the hash index option as a hash table is added at the end of each data block. If the hash utilization ratio is 1:1, the space overhead is one byte per key. The hash table utilization ratio is adjustable using `BlockBasedTableOptions::data_block_hash_table_util_ratio`. A lower utilization ratio will improve more on the point-lookup efficiency, but take more space too.

54de56844d Remove random writes from SST file ingestion (#4172)
Summary:
RocksDB used to store global_seqno in external SST files written by
SstFileWriter. During file ingestion, RocksDB uses `pwrite` to update the
`global_seqno`. Since random write is not supported in some non-POSIX compliant
file systems, external SST file ingestion is not supported on these file
systems. To address this limitation, we no longer update `global_seqno` during
file ingestion. Later RocksDB uses the MANIFEST and other information in table
properties to deduce global seqno for externally-ingested SST files.

8425c8bd4d BlockBasedTableReader: automatically adjust tail prefetch size (#4156)
Summary:
Right now we use one hard-coded prefetch size to prefetch data from the tail of the SST files. However, this may introduce a waste for some use cases, while not efficient for others.
Introduce a way to adjust this prefetch size by tracking 32 recent times, and pick a value with which the wasted read is less than 10%

235ab9dd32 Pin mmap files in ReadOnlyDB (#4053)
Summary:
https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/3881 fixed a bug where PinnableSlice pin mmap files which could be deleted with background compaction. This is however a non-issue for ReadOnlyDB when there is no compaction running and max_open_files is -1. This patch reenables the pinning feature for that case.

80ade9ad83 Pin top-level index on partitioned index/filter blocks (#4037)
Summary:
Top-level index in partitioned index/filter blocks are small and could be pinned in memory. So far we use that by cache_index_and_filter_blocks to false. This however make it difficult to keep account of the total memory usage. This patch introduces pin_top_level_index_and_filter which in combination with cache_index_and_filter_blocks=true keeps the top-level index in cache and yet pinned them to avoid cache misses and also cache lookup overhead.

f9f4d40f93 Align SST file data blocks to avoid spanning multiple pages
Summary:
Provide a block_align option in BlockBasedTableOptions to allow
alignment of SST file data blocks. This will avoid higher
IOPS/throughput load due to < 4KB data blocks spanning 2 4KB pages.
When this option is set to true, the block alignment is set to lower of
block size and 4KB.

4b65cfc723 Support for block_cache num_shards and other config via option string.
Summary:
Problem: Option string accepts only cache_size as parameter for block_cache which is specified as "block_cache=1M".
It doesn't accept other parameters like num_shards etc.

Changes :
1) ParseBlockBasedTableOption in block_based_table_factory is edited to accept cache options in the format "block_cache=<cache_size>:<num_shard_bits>:<strict_capacity_limit>:<high_pri_pool_ratio>".
Options other than cache_size are optional to maintain backward compatibility. The changes are valid for block_cache_compressed as well.
For example, "block_cache=1M:6:true:0.5", "block_cache=1M:6:true", "block_cache=1M:6" and "block_cache=1M" are all valid option strings.

2) Corresponding unit tests are added.

66a2c44ef4 Add DB::Properties::kEstimateOldestKeyTime
Summary:
With FIFO compaction we would like to get the oldest data time for monitoring. The problem is we don't have timestamp for each key in the DB. As an approximation, we expose the earliest of sst file "creation_time" property.

My plan is to override the property with a more accurate value with blob db, where we actually have timestamp.

88ed1f6ea6 Allow upgrades from nullptr to some merge operator
Summary:
Currently, RocksDB does not allow reopening a preexisting DB with no merge operator defined, with a merge operator defined. This means that if a DB ever want to add a merge operator, there's no way to do so currently.

Fix this by adding a new verification type `kByNameAllowFromNull` which will allow old values to be nullptr, and new values to be non-nullptr.

21696ba502 Replace dynamic_cast<>
Summary:
Replace dynamic_cast<> so that users can choose to build with RTTI off, so that they can save several bytes per object, and get tiny more memory available.
Some nontrivial changes:
1. Add Comparator::GetRootComparator() to get around the internal comparator hack
2. Add the two experiemental functions to DB
3. Add TableFactory::GetOptionString() to avoid unnecessary casting to get the option string
4. Since 3 is done, move the parsing option functions for table factory to table factory files too, to be symmetric.

1cd45cd1b3 FIFO Compaction with TTL
Summary:
Introducing FIFO compactions with TTL.

FIFO compaction is based on size only which makes it tricky to enable in production as use cases can have organic growth. A user requested an option to drop files based on the time of their creation instead of the total size.

To address that request:
- Added a new TTL option to FIFO compaction options.
- Updated FIFO compaction score to take TTL into consideration.
- Added a new table property, creation_time, to keep track of when the SST file is created.
- Creation_time is set as below:
  - On Flush: Set to the time of flush.
  - On Compaction: Set to the max creation_time of all the files involved in the compaction.
  - On Repair and Recovery: Set to the time of repair/recovery.
  - Old files created prior to this code change will have a creation_time of 0.
- FIFO compaction with TTL is enabled when ttl > 0. All files older than ttl will be deleted during compaction. i.e. `if (file.creation_time < (current_time - ttl)) then delete(file)`. This will enable cases where you might want to delete all files older than, say, 1 day.
- FIFO compaction will fall back to the prior way of deleting files based on size if:
  - the creation_time of all files involved in compaction is 0.
  - the total size (of all SST files combined) does not drop below `compaction_options_fifo.max_table_files_size` even if the files older than ttl are deleted.

This feature is not supported if max_open_files != -1 or with table formats other than Block-based.

**Test Plan:**
Added tests.

**Benchmark results:**
Base: FIFO with max size: 100MB ::

499ebb3ab5 Optimize for serial commits in 2PC
Summary:
Throughput: 46k tps in our sysbench settings (filling the details later)

The idea is to have the simplest change that gives us a reasonable boost
in 2PC throughput.

Major design changes:
1. The WAL file internal buffer is not flushed after each write. Instead
it is flushed before critical operations (WAL copy via fs) or when
FlushWAL is called by MySQL. Flushing the WAL buffer is also protected
via mutex_.
2. Use two sequence numbers: last seq, and last seq for write. Last seq
is the last visible sequence number for reads. Last seq for write is the
next sequence number that should be used to write to WAL/memtable. This
allows to have a memtable write be in parallel to WAL writes.
3. BatchGroup is not used for writes. This means that we can have
parallel writers which changes a major assumption in the code base. To
accommodate for that i) allow only 1 WriteImpl that intends to write to
memtable via mem_mutex_--which is fine since in 2PC almost all of the memtable writes
come via group commit phase which is serial anyway, ii) make all the
parts in the code base that assumed to be the only writer (via
EnterUnbatched) to also acquire mem_mutex_, iii) stat updates are
protected via a stat_mutex_.

Note: the first commit has the approach figured out but is not clean.
Submitting the PR anyway to get the early feedback on the approach. If
we are ok with the approach I will go ahead with this updates:
0) Rebase with Yi's pipelining changes
1) Currently batching is disabled by default to make sure that it will be
consistent with all unit tests. Will make this optional via a config.
2) A couple of unit tests are disabled. They need to be updated with the
serial commit of 2PC taken into account.
3) Replacing BatchGroup with mem_mutex_ got a bit ugly as it requires
releasing mutex_ beforehand (the same way EnterUnbatched does). This
needs to be cleaned up.

89833577a8 Delete filter before closing the table
Summary:
Some filters such as partitioned filter have pointers to the table for which they are created. Therefore is they are stored in the block cache, the should be forcibly erased from block cache before closing the  table, which would result into deleting the object. Otherwise the destructor will be called later when the cache is lazily erasing the object, which having the parent table no longer existent it could result into undefined behavior.

Update: there will be still cases the filter is not removed from the cache since the table has not kept a pointer to the cache handle to be able to forcibly release it later. We make sure that the filter destructor does not access the table pointer to get around such cases.

Summary: In T8216281 we decided to disable prefetching the index and filter during opening table handlers during startup (max_open_files = -1).

Test Plan: Rely on `IndexAndFilterBlocksOfNewTableAddedToCache` to guarantee L0 indexes and filters are still cached and change `PinL0IndexAndFilterBlocksTest` to make sure other levels are not cached (maybe add one more test to test we don't cache other levels?)

843d2e3137 Shared dictionary compression using reference block
Summary:
This adds a new metablock containing a shared dictionary that is used
to compress all data blocks in the SST file. The size of the shared dictionary
is configurable in CompressionOptions and defaults to 0. It's currently only
used for zlib/lz4/lz4hc, but the block will be stored in the SST regardless of
the compression type if the user chooses a nonzero dictionary size.

During compaction, computes the dictionary by randomly sampling the first
output file in each subcompaction. It pre-computes the intervals to sample
by assuming the output file will have the maximum allowable length. In case
the file is smaller, some of the pre-computed sampling intervals can be beyond
end-of-file, in which case we skip over those samples and the dictionary will
be a bit smaller. After the dictionary is generated using the first file in a
subcompaction, it is loaded into the compression library before writing each
block in each subsequent file of that subcompaction.

On the read path, gets the dictionary from the metablock, if it exists. Then,
loads that dictionary into the compression library before reading each block.

2391ef7214 Embed column family name in SST file
Summary:
Added the column family name to the properties block. This property
is omitted only if the property is unavailable, such as when RepairDB()
writes SST files.

In a next diff, I will change RepairDB to use this new property for
deciding to which column family an existing SST file belongs. If this
property is missing, it will add it to the "unknown" column family (same
as its existing behavior).

Test Plan:

Summary:
When a block based table file is opened, if prefetch_index_and_filter is true, it will prefetch the index and filter blocks, putting them into the block cache.
What this feature adds: when a L0 block based table file is opened, if pin_l0_filter_and_index_blocks_in_cache is true in the options (and prefetch_index_and_filter is true), then the filter and index blocks aren't released back to the block cache at the end of BlockBasedTableReader::Open(). Instead the table reader takes ownership of them, hence pinning them, ie. the LRU cache will never push them out. Meanwhile in the table reader, further accesses will not hit the block cache, thus avoiding lock contention.

Test Plan:
'export TEST_TMPDIR=/dev/shm/ && DISABLE_JEMALLOC=1 OPT=-g make all valgrind_check -j32' is OK.
I didn't run the Java tests, I don't have Java set up on my devserver.

When the table reader is destroyed, it releases the pinned blocks (if there were any). This has to happen before the cache is destroyed, so I had to introduce a TableReader::Close(), to guarantee the order of destruction.

Added two unit tests for this. Existing unit tests run fine (default is pin_l0_filter_and_index_blocks_in_cache=false).

DISABLE_JEMALLOC=1 OPT=-g make all valgrind_check -j32
  Mac: OK.
  Linux: with D55287 patched in it's OK.

7699439b7c Prevent the user from setting block_restart_interval to less than 1
Summary: If block_restart_interval gets set to less than 1 an assert will be triggered in BlockBuilder::BlockBuilder().  This prevents the user from doing this by silently setting any value less than 1 to 1.

Test Plan: Added a test (in BlockBasedTableTest in table_test) that checks invalid values to make sure that they are reset to the expected values.  The block_restart_interval value is checked along with block_size_deviation which also silently sets the value if it is outside a specific range.

e089db40f9 Skip bottom-level filter block caching when hit-optimized
Summary:
When Get() or NewIterator() trigger file loads, skip caching the filter block if
(1) optimize_filters_for_hits is set and (2) the file is on the bottommost
level. Also skip checking filters under the same conditions, which means that
for a preloaded file or a file that was trivially-moved to the bottom level, its
filter block will eventually expire from the cache.

- added parameters/instance variables in various places in order to propagate the config ("skip_filters") from version_set to block_based_table_reader
- in BlockBasedTable::Rep, this optimization prevents filter from being loaded when the file is opened simply by setting filter_policy = nullptr
- in BlockBasedTable::Get/BlockBasedTable::NewIterator, this optimization prevents filter from being used (even if it was loaded already) by setting filter = nullptr

Test Plan:
updated unit test:

  $ ./db_test --gtest_filter=DBTest.OptimizeFiltersForHits

will also run 'make check'
